Joan Miró, born on 20 April 1893 in Barcelona and died on 25 December 1983 in Palma, Mallorca, was a Spanish painter, sculptor and ceramicist. He was part of the surrealist movement, and his work has been described as « a sandbox for the subconscious mind ». He fought against the concept of art as a plaything of the rich, and broke with many of the established and accepted rules of painting. His works also demonstrate his pride in his native Catalonia.
